Section 8: Team Building Strategies

The Three Roles Framework Every great competitive team is built around three complementary roles. When all three mesh well, they create a team that can handle the widest range of opposing compositions. 1. Lead — Opens the battle. Should win or break even against common leads, generate energy fast, and ideally burn the opponent's shield early. Must be versatile enough to avoid being hard-countered too frequently. 2. Safe Switch (Pivot) — The Pokémon you swap to when the lead is in a bad matchup. Must have good neutral coverage and the ability to survive being sent in cold against unknown threats. 3. Closer — Your final Pokémon. Shines in shield-down scenarios. Should have strong spam moves or exceptional bulk. Wins the endgame when the opponent has no shields remaining. Shield Baiting - Cheap two-bar Charged Moves (e.g., Body Slam, Rock Slide, Rock Tomb) bait shields even when they deal moderate damage - Follow with a powerful but expensive move (e.g., Earthquake, Hydro Pump) once shields are exhausted - Example: Clodsire uses Acid Spray → forces an opponent's shield → Sludge Bomb then deals full unshielded damage Energy Management - Fast moves build energy; Charged Moves spend it

- Prioritize Pokémon with fast energy-generating moves — Mud Shot, Lock- On, Counter, and Poison Sting are among the best in the game - Entering a new battle with an energy advantage (from farming) can flip matchups that would otherwise be losses Switch Advantage - Winning the last swap opportunity is critical — forcing your opponent to switch reactively leaves them in suboptimal matchups - Lead matchup losses can be fully recovered by smart switching — do not panic-swap; switch with purpose - Important: Switching resets Charged Move energy for the Pokémon coming in, but energy is retained when swapping out Type Coverage for Team Building Your Pokémon's Weakness Suggested Team Coverage Typing Weak to Fairy Add Steel or Poison type Weak to Ground Add Flying, Ghost, or Water type Weak to Fighting Add Ghost, Fairy, or Flying type Weak to Ice Add Steel or Fire type Weak to Electric Add Ground or Grass type Weak to Dragon Add Fairy, Ice, or Steel type Weak to Dark Add Fighting, Fairy, or Bug type Weak to Ghost Add Normal or Dark type Recommended Beginner Team Compositions
